The Power of Breathing: A Simple Way to Reduce Stress
We breathe all day without thinking about it. But when we feel stressed, our breathing often becomes faster, shallower, and more focused in the upper chest.
The good news is that we can use our breath to help calm the body and mind.
How Does Breathing Help Reduce Stress?
When we are stressed, our sympathetic nervous system, often called the “fight-or-flight” system, becomes more active. Our heart rate increases, our muscles become tense, and our breathing becomes faster.
Slow, controlled breathing can help shift our body toward the parasympathetic nervous system, which supports rest, relaxation, and recovery.
Breathing is also closely connected to the vagus nerve, an important part of the parasympathetic nervous system. The movement of the diaphragm during breathing, together with slow, controlled breathing patterns, influences vagal activity and can help promote a calmer state.
This is one reason you may feel more relaxed after a few minutes of slow breathing.
Try Longer Exhalations
One of the simplest techniques is to make your exhalation slightly longer than your inhalation.
Try:
Inhale gently for 4 seconds.Exhale slowly for 6 seconds.
You don't need to take a huge breath. Keep your breathing comfortable and relaxed.
As you exhale, allow your shoulders, jaw, and abdomen to soften.
Continue for 2–5 minutes and notice how your body feels.
Your Breath Is Always With You
The wonderful thing about breathing exercises is that you don't need any special equipment. You can practice them almost anywhere. Before a meeting, during a stressful commute, before bed, or whenever you feel overwhelmed....
You don't have to wait until you're very stressed. Practicing for just a few minutes each day can help you become more aware of your breathing and give you a simple tool to use when life feels challenging.
The next time you feel stressed, pause.
Take a gentle breath in.
And slowly breathe out.
Sometimes, changing the way you breathe can be the first step toward changing the way you feel.
